Recent innovations in guitar technology have meant that I can get away without an amplifier these days, but there are still a small number of effects I cannot live without. And whilst my heavily curated pedalboard is very easy to transport, it&rsquo;s still bigger than my laptop and it doesn&rsquo;t use a single typeclass. This shift reflects a growing trend in the open-source field, where companies initially leverage an open-source community only to limit access later. The talk delves into Akka's 13-year open-source history and its pivot, highlighting clashes between different open-source communities' governance styles. The narrative covers the emergence of Pekko, its current state, and the role of the Apache Incubator in this transformative journey.</p>

<p>In this presentation, Nabil Abdel-Hafeez provides an overview of HTTP server construction in Scala, covering routes, concurrency, resource handling, request/response interception, modularity, and complexity.</p>

<p>​As Rust matures so do the options for Rust and web programming. Some people argue that Rust is not the language for web programming. However, Maxwell Flitton believes that it is the future of web programming. This author of the 1st, 2nd, and upcoming 3rd edition of the Packt book Rust and Web Programming is going to cover key concepts that enable you to write productive flexible code that scales. These concepts will empower you to unit test your endpoints, mock your database connections, swap out databases and web frameworks with just a few lines of code, embed Rust into Redis caches, compile all servers into one monolith, or burst out your system into microservices just by changing the command, embed JavaScript frontend applications into the Rust binary with the server for the Rust server to serve, and build distroless Docker builds that are so stripped down they don&rsquo;t have a terminal. You can now embed Rust code into NGINX, Redis, Postgres, and core libraries like TLS have been rewritten in Rust. It&rsquo;s no mistake that Maxwell Flitton works for SurrealDB, a database written in Rust that can run in the browser, distributed, on a server, or embedded. Maxwell believes that Rust is going to do to the web, what C did to hardware.<br><br><strong>More About This Speaker: </strong><br>Maxwell Flitton is a software engineer at SurrealDB. He is also a visiting research associate, at the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Science at Kings College London. Here Maxwell is leading the Rust software development for medical devices and surgical robotics.</p>

<p>​Polkadot is a rapidly evolving open source blockchain protocol that depends on the coordination of various and often unaffiliated developers, node operators, wallet creators, and other contributors. For these actors to seamlessly interact, they need clear, unified documentation as a source of truth. At Parity, where we develop one of the main exemplary implementations of Polkadot, we&rsquo;ve aimed to move our documentation directly into the Rust codebase using Rust Docs to keep it in actual parity with the code. A core part of this approach is the Docify crate, which dynamically embeds and runs code examples and tests within the documentation itself, ensuring everything stays accurate and up-to-date. In this talk, I&rsquo;ll demonstrate how this method leveraging Docify simplifies maintenance and keeps the entire ecosystem synchronized.</p>

<p>I will explore how our team developed a custom solution to handle the escalating data and cost challenges faced by traditional cloud services in our data pipeline. Originally utilizing Dataflow for moving 2 billions of events daily from Kafka to BigQuery, the growing costs prompted a shift to a more sustainable model. I will detail our transition to a two-part custom application that stages data in GCP Cloud Storage before loading it into BigQuery, highlighting how Scala's features and the ZIO ecosystem significantly contributed to the performance and reliability of this application.</p>
